During the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel conquers and occupies large areas of land, including the Sinai Peninsula which then (and now) belonged to Egypt.

However, Nasser and his men fear this will lose them the support of the Soviet Union. Realising the Soviet Union is a declining power, Ashraf insists Egypt cut its ties with the Soviets. Nasser rebukes Ashraf and afterward urges Mona to divorce her husband, which Ashraf overhears.

1979: Shortly after the Iranian Revolution, Iraqi Vice President Saddam Hussein fears the increasing influence of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, as well as Iraqi president Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr's proposed union with Syria. Saddam instigates the overthrow of President al-Bakr. After being appointed president, Saddam orders his maternal half-brother, Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti, to initiate a bloody purge of the Ba'ath Party leadership in order to wipe out "traitors".
