Before the Virtual Art Academy
Hello, I am Barry John Raybould, a professional plein air painter.
When I started to learn to paint, I could not find an art school that covered all the aspects of painting I wanted to learn, including both traditional academic realism, impressionism, and the principles of modern art.
So I sought out some of the best contemporary painters I could find, attended lots of specialist advanced courses at art colleges, and devoured dozens of books, many of which are now hard to find, and out of print.
My hard work paid off. After a few years I was juried into the Carmel Art Association, one of the key centers of California Impressionism in the beginning of the 20th Century, and the California Art Club, one of the oldest professional art organizations in the United States.
I painted with the group of Central Californian Coast artists known as the ‘Informalists’, and began to win awards in national plein air painting competitions in the US. Over the following years I was invited to participate in many juried exhibitions, solo and group shows with other professional artists, and found representation in art galleries in the US, the UK, Italy, and in China (see my Awards and Int

Green is gorgeous and springing up everywhere.
Yes, I actually believe green is one of the most wonderful colors but have you ever wondered what colors make green? I often read that greens are difficult. But maybe this depends on your perspective. From where I sit there are a great variety of them and so making green means you will most likely wonder what colors make green for many of the paintings you will be working on. Greens in the spring
Spring is a great opportunity to see many vibrant and fresh greens. Greens are everywhere and there is a tremendous variety in different climates and areas. There are very warm greens bordering on yellow and very cold ones that are almost blue.
