    WASHINGTON (AP) — Apollo 12 astronaut Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr., one of a dozen men who flew around the moon but didn't land there, has died, NASA said. He was 88.

    Gordon grew up in Kingston, and Richard Gordon Elementary was named after him when it opened there in 1994. He routinely visited the school and spoke to students, most recently in 2013.

    “With space travel being a large part of his history, the school celebrates this theme of learning and adventure in their school-wide efforts each day,” said Jenn Markaryan, North Kitsap School District spokeswoman. “We will continue to honor and cherish Mr. Gordon’s life and work at Richard Gordon Elementary. Our heart goes out his family and friends.”
