Watercolor: Simple, Fast and Focused

I am an experienced watercolor artist and instructor. I am always looking for new ideas and methods so I read Mel Stabin’s book and googled him online. If you are new to watercolor you may or may not find this book valuable for a few reasons. First of all, I recommend you look carefully at his paintings. There are many online to look at. Ask yourself if this is the style you aspire to. If it isn’t, I recommend you find a book by an artist with a style you immediately fall in love with. Stabin does cover the elements of color, value, and equipment on an entry-level. However, when it comes to design personally I think he isn’t all that helpful. What he says is true, but I just don’t think it would connect for a beginner. It is a lovely concept to talk about, but getting from the flowery words to the actual painting is a completely another matter. So I would have a hard time rating this book. For some it might work, for some, it might just be another of the many beginning watercolor instruction books, and for some, it might not be the style they are striving to paint in.

His paintings have been the recipient of numerous national awards and have been represented in major exhibitions including the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, National Academy of Design, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Watercolor West, Allied Artists of America, Butler Institute of American Art, North East Watercolor Society, and New Jersey Watercolor Society.

Mel has had seventeen one-man exhibitions of his watercolors. His paintings are in many private and corporate collections. Mel was a director for the American Watercolor Society's 2005 and 2006 exhibitions and was a Juror of Selection for the American Watercolor Society's 2006 Annual International Exhibition.

Mel received the honor of Master Status from the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and was named one of the "Top Ten Watercolor Masters of Today" by the art website www.artmatch4U.com. Mel was invited by the American Watercolor Society to do a demonstration for their "Watercolor Evenings" during their 144th Annual International Exhibition.
