  • Xavier Teixido's last 'Taste of the Nation'

Xavier Teixido isn't turning his back on charities in the state, but next month will be the last time he will host and organize the annual Share Our Strength "Taste of the Nation" dinner at his Brandywine Hundred restaurant.

For 26 years, Teixido has helped fight childhood hunger in Delaware.

With this year's April 10 meal, he expects to leave a legacy of having raised more than $1 million for such charities as the Food Bank of Delaware, the Claymont Community Center and the Ministry of Caring.

"Our focus is to go out strong," says Teixido, whose lineup includes chefs from Delaware, New Orleans, Boston and Vermont.

"It's time. I'm not embarrassed to step down after 26 years."

The Harry's Savoy Grill ballroom dinner, which includes a reception, silent auction and raffle, has long stood out in a sea of culinary charity events.

Teixido doesn't host a small-plates, stroll-and-troll affair. Guests, who pay at least $200 per ticket, are treated to a sit-down, multicourse meal made by celebrated chefs, some of whom have been James Beard Award winners and have appeared on the Food Network.

Each course is always paired with wines selected and poured by guest sommeliers.

Among people with a classical education, it has from time to time been associated with Virgil's Aeneid, where it is borne by the sister of Dido , Queen of Carthage. This Phoenician name may ultimately be of Semitic origin, and thus related to the biblical Anne. However, the connection, if it exists, is indirect rather than direct.
